In 1963, Stephen George Coulthard Sr. and Noel Marquis, who were then working at Blaze Signs in Fremont, CA, seized the opportunity and acquired Amcoe Sign Company. Stephen Coulthard Sr., renowned as the original sign designer for the iconic “Doggie Diner Head” sign, brought his exceptional talent and creativity to the company. He had previously utilized the likeness of his mother’s Dachshund, Peggy, to create the distinctive 3D hand drawing and final full acrylic mold for the Doggie Diner head.

In 2003, Amcoe Sign Company experienced a significant transition when Mr. Noel Marquis, a key figure in the company, passed away after a long illness. This event led to Mr. Steven Keith Coulthard (2nd Generation) acquiring the remaining shares of Amcoe Sign and merging it with his own company, the Coulthard Identity Group. This merger created a powerful synergy, allowing the combined entity to offer a wide range of identity items, including signage, business collateral, brochures, sales presentations, websites, fleet graphics, and more.
The Coulthard Identity Group: Pioneers in Graphical Internet Websites
The Coulthard Identity Group has its origins in 1989 when Steven Keith Coulthard established it in Fremont, CA. Before founding the company, Steven had served as the lead designer for the innovative “Barron Communications Group” in Alameda, CA. During his time there, the Barron Communications Group was at the forefront of graphical internet websites, revolutionizing the online landscape, which had primarily been text-based until then.

In the late 1970s, Stephen Coulthard, the visionary behind Amcoe Sign Company, had the privilege of collaborating with the young Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs to create a significant piece of history—a redwood sign for Apple Computer’s newly opened location on DeAnza Blvd in Cupertino, CA. Little did they know at the time that Apple would grow into a global powerhouse. The sign itself was a modest yet remarkable creation, featuring a sandblasted design with a simple painted apple striped logo and clean lettering.
A Testament to Apple’s Early Days
Once the sign was fabricated and stained, it received its final touch from one of Palo Alto’s talented artisan sign painters, Gordon “Gordy” Siebert (deceased), who had previously worked for Amcoe Sign during the 1970s and 1980s. Gordy’s skilled hand painted the sign, adding the finishing touches. Today, this iconic sign, representing Apple’s humble beginnings, can be viewed at the prestigious Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA.
